The 2021 NFL Rookie QB Chronicles- #1
The NFL season kicks off every year with the opening of free agency. This is a pivotal time for all NFL fans. The excitement is not only about impactful additions of new players, but the retention of beloved players as well. And for the analytical and knowledgeable fans, it goes even deeper. The moves a team makes in those opening few weeks is predictive of the direction the organization may be taking in the draft to follow. For example, the belief that the New York Jets were going to take an edge rusher dropped significantly when the Jets signed Carl Lawson. But the real drama for many teams was focused on the QB room. If the Bears would have had their way before the misconduct accusations, DeShaun would have ended up in Chicago. That potential trade would have changed one of the most exciting moments of the draft, and dramatically impacted multiple teams.
I think the most enticing theme of the 2021 pre-season has been circling around the position of quarterback. I am only going to focus on the newly drafted rookies. The only exception to this rule may come when a veteran quarterback is involved in a situation that impacts one of the rookie quarterbacks. So, I may mention the situation with Deshaun Watson if it ends up leading to David Mills getting into a game sooner than expected. There are a couple of others that may not get a lot of attention. For example, if Tom Brady and Kirk Cousins stay healthy, it is unlikely Kyle Trask or Kellen Mond would get much coverage. However, I will write about these guys when I discuss the draft and the possible impact they may have on their team.
Before I dig into the players and make observations moving forward, I wanted to clarify a few things. I am just like you. I am a fan. I am not, and do not pretend to be an expert on college football or the NFL. Like GREENBEAN, I do not think we should let the media guys control the narrative of our teams. Those guys can announce and release important news on the wire so WE could react to the moves and speculate if it is positive for our organization. I think there are too many writers pushing a manufactured narrative that is meant to get clicks, rather than be informative.
Leading up to the start of the regular season I will be reviewing the draft and the quarterbacks selected. I will provide my insight and opinions of them. I will be using my own analysis of the tape, and leveraging the expertise and observations of other fans. I will continue to follow these young quarterbacks through camp and the regular season. I will start by saying I am more excited by this year’s class than any other class I have seen for a long time. At the same time, I can say that this might all be built on hyperbole and prove to be a disappointment. That is why I love this game. We never really know who will strive, and who will fail. I hope you join me for the ride. Next week I will start by focusing on the number one pick, Trevor Lawrence.
